In this work, Bomb Pecks, I wanted to capture my happy childhood memories of playing on the bomb pecks of Birmingham in the area called Small Heath. The Bomb Pecks were derelict houses or factories which unofficially became art adventure playgrounds. The debris of the Bomb Pecks contained timber, nails, and discarded prams and strollers, which we made into go-karts. This memorable childhood taught us to use our hands and ingenuity for free. We built imaginary dens and also cleared some space to play football.
I always have ideas and sketch with a pen or anything lying around (doodling). Initially, I produced many draft sketches to broaden my ideas. However, I then realised that the simple brick that was forever present became something that I could use in an artistic way to create unique images.
Using Adobe Photoshop, I have translated my drawings into colourful RISO prints. It was enjoyable and exciting to mix the limited colours of RISO to make my sketches come alive. I was sceptical at first because I don't like the polished advertisement finish of Photoshop. I like the fact that I can work on my doodles - hopefully, you can see the hand-drawn sketch in the work. I've even over-emphasised the rough shading.
